Highway Africa: 10-12 September 2007, Rhodes University, Grahamstown

The official launch of Highway Africa with all the sponsors took place in downtown Jo’burg Wednesday, 29 August 2007, at the Market Theatre. The main sponsors are SABC, Absa and Telkom, as well as Rhodes University – which birthed this annual media event in its New Media Lab 11 years ago – and all the continent-wide media and associated organisations.

After the sponsors had their say about why they’re involved, we all adjourned for a super lunch at Moyo at the Market Theatre. Excellent food and excellent service.

Bizcommunity.com will be reporting on and blogging from Highway Africa this year and the Digital Citizen Indaba which runs alongside. There are some great workshops and topics this year. Highlights: SABC New Media Awards; book launches, including Prof Guy Berger and Elizabeth Barrett’s ’50 Years of Journalism’; Internet governance; digital possibilities for Africa; the focus on mobile technology and the future of journalism (all in one plenary session!); the value of social networks to the media (a really hot topic in all our newsrooms right now); media sustainability in this networked world; the African blogosphere; cyber activism and the recent launch of the blog aggregators and other innovations from our very own local cyber-hotties in South Africa.

Really looking forward to all the debates and networking!

See ya in cyberspace,
Louise
