Laaik it? Dislaaik it? You be the judge on 24.com’s new social media site

Well, after months of rumours, 24.com have finally gone live with the beta version of Laaik.it, a social news bookmarking site, as scooped by Charl Norman. I heard about it through a Twitter sms while I was out and about.

So far, there are blog posts on it by Matthew Buckland, Uno de Waal and adii. The general gist seems to be to dislaaik it… But let’s see how it develops. I’m waiting for an official press release.

Update 26 October: The dialogue continues on Stii’s blog. And on Henre Roussouw’s.

Update late 26 October: Oh, and here’s the official blog post from Inside 24.com.

    Hey Simone,
Most of the crit (from Adii’s blog) has come from a design perspective. To be honest, reviewing a site purely on design merits doesn’t give you a lot of info on it.

It’s still a beta product and the real functionality etc should come in the following months.

    Hey Simone,

yes - we are looking forward to lively debate on this one. My approach is to take the negative comments and do something about them if we feel they have merit.

We are expecting cynicism - but that’s cool : ) The bigger you are the harsher you get judged. That’s life. The acid test for us will be how much traction we can get from the mass market that we already attract. It will be great to expose the value of social media to less tech savvy SA users.

You can contact me for a interview if you keen.

What is NB here is that in the spirit of the changing media I decided to give the scoop to a blogger (Charl Norman) - which is a Novel approach.

PS - It’s a beta and we anticipate buggs under load and I think there are some usability issues- so - in the spirit of Web2.0 - it’s a work in progress.

    @Uno: Point taken. :) I stand corrected.

@Elan: Thanks for commenting. I’ll put on my reluctant writer’s hat and think of some questions to email you. :)

@Uno, I disagree with you on your comment. My comments, along with others, on that post are far from design orientated and more from an overall strategy.

I was hoping Elan would elaborate further on his comment on Adii’s blog but from reading more on this blog as well as Matt’s blog I kind of understand where 24 is going with this.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing where it goes from here.

I’m with Matt Buckland here. The design to me is nice, if probably not out of this world. But it’s more than enough to spark an interest.

The functionality is yet a bit iffy, but I believe in the potential and will accept the Beta tag as being just that.
