Arthur Goldstck is providing us with some interesting statistics about mobile usage in South Africa, as well as blogosphere statistics.

Mobile Penetration

Arthur says that the number of cellphone users is exaggerated. There are about 1.3 accounts per person, as well as tracking devices that also use GSM connection, and are counted as additional customers. The true number is 32 million (not the usual 40 million that is reported).

Network Churn

8% of urban users say they have ported.

Vodacom appears to have lost out most from porting.

Phones

More than half of urban cellphone users have had their hone for less than a year.

One third want a new phone in the next year

Samsung is a challenger to Nokia

11% of Internet users have accessed Internet via phone. Small proportion only use phone for Internet access.

Mobile banking

Penetration: 17%, and is likely to keep growing

Close to 30% of users in the 46-55 age group use mobile banking

There is an increase in transactions beyond balance enquiries.

FNB were the leader in cellphone banking, that position is now held by Absa (24% of their customers use cell phone to bank.)
