Users are using the Internet for both online and offline shopping.
60% of online purchases happen at multi-channel shops (those that are present online and offline). 25% happens at shops that are online only, and 15% at brand “shop fronts”
Of all purchases, only 5% happen online, but 50% of all purchases are affected by online research. A user will visit on average 4 sites to research a purchase. Over 55% of online researchers are looking for uer reviews, to which the most value is placed.
Word of Mouth is very important.
22% of people always research a major purchase online, and 42% research most of the time.
70% of US shoppers did some Christmas 2007 shopping online. On average, they made 40% of their purchases this way.
You can buy a $8000 Valentino dress online, and people are doing it. Internet is big on big ticket purchases.
Resellers like Amazon are putting “stores in stores”. Amazon sells Macy’s products. All fulfillment happens on Macy’s side, but payment is maneuvered through Amazon.
In late 1990’s Macy’s had 6 people working on the corporate website. Today there are more than 350.

It’s very interesting that people are willing to buy high price items online. Seems the fear of shopping online is wearing off. This is good news for online retailers. Some of the high price niches are still relatively untapped (like automobiles).
