[Pam in Cannes] Who will win the Titanium Lion?

Dentsu seminar at Cannes Lions

Now, Theo Ferreira has a wager that HBO Voyeur will win the Titanium. Anybody want to place your bets?

New Directors showcase was yet again mind blowing for me. Just the start of it this year was amazing. The opening act (a real live act out of Brazil) did this incredible one-man show interpreting ‘Fearless’. I’m sorry but I am battling to find words to explain it other than absolutely awesome. The showcase as, always, was incredible with a 3D movie for Bjork (yes, we all put on our glasses) and some seriously thought-provoking animation work, also truly amazing animation/live action mix. It is enviable for me as to how clever people are.

I hope this year I can make my BUDS (Budding Underexposed Directors Showcase), just as inspiring – watch the press!

I went to the Dentsu – Asian Diversity seminar. It too was fantastic. Lots of work was showcased and as the seminar progressed it seemed, so did the work. I liked one of the comments from Akira Kagami of Dentsu Tokyo, who hosted the seminar: “Make your advertising a tangible experience of everyday life” – that resonated with me (mmmmmm, sounding like a real marketeer!). An interesting fact, what the marketeers call ‘post-80’ are single children households so no siblings, so what they ultimately seek is companionship. That was really an interesting insight to me.

Asia is also realising, besides its globalisation, that they are getting their confidence and upping their self-esteem, aided too by the upcoming Olympics. We need to do this in Africa, why can’t we??? Maybe it’s up to us, guys, maybe it’s up to us.

I watched another seminar presented by Hamish McLennan of Y&R Australia. He interviewed Rupert Murdoch and Peter Chernin. Oh dear, it was a little ho-hum. I think Hamish wasn’t dynamic enough to handle these two power houses; it lost impetus for me.Anti-smoking print ads from India, Cannes LionsAnti-smoking print ads from India, Cannes Lions

Gosh, this place is busy. Five years ago one could wander in and out of seminars at will, now you have to queue to get in. New Directors showcase was insane – the queue went around the building! The festival is claiming 9500 delegates for the week – sheesh, no wonder.

Attached please see the two print ads I referred to yesterday from India. I hope they make you smile as much as I did. The end payoff line in both read: Smokers get some answers to questions faster. (Thank you, Tony Koenderman.)

Condor hosted a beach soccer game/party. They even cracked boerie rolls – it was great fun… I think Holland won! Some of us dragged ourselves to the much coveted SHOTS party (I think you could have made serious money selling a ticket), also beach, beautiful along the pier, but I faded fast… camp duvet was calling… loudly!
