[No Comment] Cheering for 2010

The bittersweet aspect of one’s job as both news editor, editor and journalist on one of the country’s largest daily news service providers, is that one gets a ton of mail - thousands of emails a week. The upside is that you also get a pretty good overview of what is happening in your industry because you get to see pretty much everything, from press releases, events, comments, blogs, breaking news, thought leadership - and talk to some of the best people out there on a regular basis. We launched our 2010 section on Bizcommunity.com almost two years ago when FIFA and the 2010 LOC started formal, regular networking sessions with the media. It’s great to see the amount of news from our industry starting to build up and add to the ‘official’ releases of value to our industry on media organisation and brand opportunities and the promotional rules and regulations. Today I subbed two great stories from two of our agencies: Zoom on a campaign for foreign visitors to offset their carbon footprint when travelling to SA, by paying a nominal fee for a tree to be planted; and then BBDO Cape Town’s campaign for John Perlman’s worthy ‘Dreamfields’ initiative. Both great good news stories and a reminder that 2010 is approaching - fast. We need to start that build up to the excitement of what 2010 means to us as a nation. What it will do for our spirit, what it will do for Africa. I want to feel that excitement as an ordinary citizen, not just from my privileged perch.

Laduma!
